Sometimes having a back-up plan is the smart and prudent course of action. Back-up plans are so grown-up and responsible. But what happens when you’re standing with one foot in and one foot out? In my experience, we usually close the door and retreat. We are reluctant to commit to ourselves, and we end up denying ourselves the satisfaction of playing full-out, getting dirty and sweaty. We end up with feelings of regret and the nagging “What if?” question. Just a tip Career Coaching in Brisbane

Some great points about career change - especially about self-awareness. Client's need to know who they are, why they do work, how they do it, and with who they work well!

Thanks, Jonathan. I cannot see the point of 'rose tinted glasses' as portfolio working is not for everyone.

Interesting that when I was speaking at an executive job cub, last week, that the realisation was that the pros and cons are almost identical, so it is really about whether you have the right mindset and behaviours to make it work for you and if so it will be greatly rewarding. On the basis that security is almost non existent in the employed world, for many people it is about 'taking the leap of faith' and the Nike adage 'just do it'!

Steve, working in career coaching as well I often talk to people about portfolio careers when discussing roles and lifestyle. Generally received with a positive interest but then other people raise the issues of security, stability and income which you've highlighted as con's in this blog.

Thanks for your insightful perspective on portfolio careers, people often rattle on about the pro's and ignore the con's.

Thanks, Tony. I hear what you say, however it is important that people both master the different strands of their portfolio and have a passion them also. Otherwise they could become the classic 'jack of all trades and master of none'!

With online training, portfolio career development is easier than ever. No more need for years of education - if you can research a topic, study it and sit tests then you stand a good chance of people employing you to provide that service.

Hey, great post, your point about the hidden job market is very important as, in my opinion, the economy and ludicrous job board pricing are only going to make it bigger.
